Description
A hearty, crispy, and cheesy baked sandwich that combines Italian sausage, pepperoni, ham, provolone, and mozzarella on sub rolls. This easy weeknight dinner is ready in about 20 minutes and offers the classic grinder taste without the mess of frying.
Ingredients
- 4 large sub rolls or hoagie rolls, sliced horizontally but not all the way through
- 1/2 lb Italian sausage, sliced thin
- 1/2 cup pepperoni, sliced
- 1/2 lb ham, sliced
- 1 cup provolone cheese, sliced
- 1 cup low-moisture mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1/2 cup marinara sauce
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Slice sub rolls horizontally, leaving them connected like a hinge to create a pocket.
- In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, garlic powder, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Brush this mixture generously on the cut sides of the bread.
- Layer Italian sausage, pepperoni, and ham onto the bottom half of the rolls, distributing evenly.
- Sprinkle sliced provolone over the meats, then add small dollops of marinara sauce. Top with shredded mozzarella.
- Brush the top crust of the rolls with melted butter.
- Place assembled rolls on a baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until cheese is bubbly and bread is toasted. Tent with foil if browning too quickly.
- Remove from oven and let rest for 2-3 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
Use a thick marinara sauce to prevent soggy bread. Brushing the bread with the mayo mixture creates a barrier against moisture. Letting the sandwiches rest for a few minutes helps the cheese set and makes them easier to cut. For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free sub rolls. For dairy-free, swap cheeses for vegan alternatives.
