Creamy Cheddar Bay Burger Bake

  • Author: angela_woods
  • Total Time: 35-40 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

A comforting 5-ingredient casserole that combines savory ground beef with buttery, garlicky cheddar biscuits. This easy weeknight dinner is crispy on top, creamy in the middle, and ready in under 40 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 package (8-10 rolls) dinner rolls or refrigerated biscuit dough
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried bay leaves, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 stalks green onions, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 4 ounces cream cheese, softened

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until no pink remains (5-7 minutes). Drain excess fat if necessary, season with salt and pepper, and remove from heat.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, garlic powder, onion powder, and crushed dried bay leaves.
  4. Spread the cooked beef evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish. If using cream cheese, dollop it over the beef and gently mix. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar cheese over the meat.
  5. Tear the dinner rolls or biscuits into large chunks and scatter them evenly over the cheese and beef layer without pressing down.
  6. Pour the garlic butter mixture evenly over the biscuit chunks. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on top.
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown and bubbly. For a crispier top, broil for the last 1-2 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.
  8. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes to allow the cheese to set. Garnish with chopped green onions and serve warm.

Notes

Use sharp cheddar for better flavor and melting. Crush bay leaves finely to avoid biting into whole leaves. Do not use pre-shredded cheese as anti-caking agents prevent smooth melting. If using very fatty beef, drain excess grease to prevent a soggy bottom. Can be assembled up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerated before baking.
