Crispy Monte Cristo Roll-Ups

  • Author: angela_woods
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

A deconstructed, easier-to-handle version of the classic Monte Cristo sandwich, rolled tightly and fried until golden. This recipe balances savory deli meats and melty cheese with sweet jam for a perfect savory-sweet brunch or snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices white or brioche bread (crusts trimmed)
  • 12 slices ham and turkey deli meat (thinly sliced)
  • 8 slices Swiss or Gruyère cheese
  • 1/2 cup strawberry or raspberry jam (seedless)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Salt and black pepper (to taste)
  • Butter or neutral oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Trim the crusts off all bread slices. If bread is thick, gently flatten it with a rolling pin to make it pliable.
  2. Spread a thin layer of jam (about 1 tablespoon) over each slice of bread, leaving a small margin at the edge.
  3. Layer two slices of deli meat and two slices of cheese on top of the jam on each bread slice.
  4. Starting from one short end, roll the bread tightly, tucking in the filling. Place seam-side down and press gently to seal.
  5. In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  6. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add butter and oil until foaming but not brown.
  7. Dip each roll-up into the egg batter for a few seconds on all sides to coat evenly.
  8. Place rolls seam-side down in the hot skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes until golden brown, then flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  9. Remove from pan and drain on a wire rack or paper towel. Dust with powdered sugar and serve immediately.

Notes

Ensure rolls are tight to prevent filling from leaking. Do not overcrowd the pan; cook in batches if necessary. For a gluten-free option, use soft gluten-free bread. For dairy-free, use vegan cheese and maple syrup instead of jam.
