Description
A simple, set-it-and-forget-it slow cooker recipe that yields tender, juicy pulled pork with just five ingredients. Perfect for busy weeknights, meal prep, and feeding a crowd.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3–4 lbs Pork Shoulder (Boston Butt)
- 1 large Yellow Onion, sliced into thin half-moons
- 1 cup low-sodium Chicken Broth
- 2 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1 cup BBQ Sauce (Kansas City-style recommended)
Instructions
- Rinse pork shoulder under cold water and pat dry. Place in the slow cooker.
- Slice the yellow onion into thin strips and scatter evenly over and around the pork.
- Pour the chicken broth and apple cider vinegar over the pork and onions. Do not stir.
- Cover and cook on LOW for 8-10 hours until the meat is fork-tender.
- Remove pork from the cooker and shred using two forks, discarding large pieces of fat or bone.
- Return shredded pork to the slow cooker and pour in the BBQ sauce. Stir gently to coat.
- Let sit on LOW for an additional 15-30 minutes to allow the meat to absorb the sauce flavors.
Notes
Ensure the internal temperature reaches at least 195°F (90°C) for optimal tenderness. If the mixture is too watery after adding sauce, remove the lid and cook on HIGH for 20 minutes to evaporate excess liquid. Do not drain the juices from the slow cooker; mix them into the sauce for richness. Pork loin is not recommended as it is too lean.
