Description
A quick and comforting weeknight lunch featuring grilled sourdough bread, savory turkey breast, and melted Swiss cheese, finished with a crispy buttery crust.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 slices sourdough or thick-cut white bread
- 8 ounces low-sodium deli turkey breast
- 4 slices Swiss cheese (or block Swiss grated)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
- Whole grain mustard
- Dill pickle slices (optional)
- Thinly sliced red onion (optional)
Instructions
- Spread mayonnaise on one side of each of the two bread slices (this side faces out). Spread whole grain mustard on the other side of each slice.
- Place the two slices of bread mustard-side up. On one slice, layer the Swiss cheese, then the turkey breast, and optional pickles or onions.
- Place the second slice of bread on top, mayo-side facing up, to complete the sandwich. Press down gently.
- Heat a heavy-bottomed skillet (like cast iron) over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter, swirling to coat the pan.
- Place the sandwich in the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and crispy.
- Flip the sandwich using a spatula. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter to the pan and spread around. Press down gently on the sandwich.
- Cook for another 3-4 minutes until the second side is golden and the cheese is fully melted. If needed, lower heat and cover with a lid for a minute to steam the cheese.
- Remove from pan and let rest for 1 minute before slicing diagonally and serving.
Notes
Use medium-low heat to prevent burning the bread before the cheese melts. If using gluten-free bread, monitor closely as it burns faster. For best melting, use block Swiss cheese grated fresh rather than pre-shredded. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to two days and reheated in a skillet.
